How to use the grid method to transfer an image
The grid method is a simple way to reproduce or enlarge an image that you want to draw or paint. This process can take some time depending on how large or detailed your image is. Although this process is not as simple as tracing, it does add the skill of being able to sketch well.
To sum it all up, this method involves drawing a grid over your reference photo, and then drawing a grid over your work surface (paper, canvas, etc.) The key to grid drawing is to make sure the grid on your work surface is of equal ratio to your reference grid. Then you draw the image on your surface focusing on one square at a time. Once the entire imaged has been produced you simply erase all of the grid lines.

2. Grid the photograph
Grid on both pieces of paper.
For this image I did grids 1/2 inch.
3. Count the number of boxes on the reference
paper and final paper to make sure they match.
4. Number the boxes on both pieces of paper, and
make sure the numbers coordinate.
5. Start drawing the picture focusing on one box
at a time.
6. Once your drawing has been completed
you can erase all of the lines and look at
your masterpiece.
This method helped me learn how to proportionally draw when I first began. I do not use this technique as much now, but I normally use it when drawing portraits so I can get the most accurate drawing.
